Salon Stylists: Jack and Chika

In 1991, Jack started his career by attending beauty school in Kanagawa, Japan. He soon decided that he wanted to test his skills abroad and moved to Boston in 1996 where he worked as a hair stylist at a salon on Newbury Street for 6 years. Determined to become an independent salon owner by the age of 30, Jack moved back to Japan in 2002 and the following year, established Salon DEFI in Osaka, Japan. The name DEFI (French for “Challenge”) was chosen as a reflection of his resolution to himself.

Even though Jack enjoyed working in Japan, he slowly began looking abroad again as he wanted to hone his skills with different types and textures of hair other than Japanese. With new motivation, Jack moved back to Boston, MA in 2008 and opened his Salon DEFI on Newbury Street. Salon DEFI moved from its’ original location to its’ current location in 2015.

The salon specializes in Japanese hair cut techniques. The preliminary adjustment is made after the hair has been washed (on wet hair) and then completely dried. Details such as style and design are cut on dry hair while the stylist looks at overall hair flow, tendencies, structure, and face shape. Jack, specializes in short hair cuts and bobs. His secondary specialization is with the Japanese Straightening Perm. In Boston, it might be a little difficult to find a stylist who is knowledgable with this perm, however having over 25 years of experience with a diverse range of hair types and textures, Jack is an expert in this field.
